How to Care for Granite Countertops

By JD Theis

A granite countertop is just the thing to be appreciated for its exquisiteness and practicality. It is worth spending the time as well as money in buying the stone for the functionality it offers. However if one takes good care of it when in use it will strengthen and serve as insurance for all that is spent on it. Granite countertop has a long life and will serve you for a number of years to come.

The first step is to maintain the resplendent appearance of the granite countertop whereby its brilliance is untarnished and its beauty upheld. Never allow spills (that may contain chemical constituents) to stay long on its surface whereby it will cause chemical reaction between the spill and the surface. Blot them out the very instant they are spilled or noticed.

Also remember that even when you are very anxious about maintaining a clean surface, you have to be particular about the cleaning agents you use for the granite countertop. Be careful about using neutral cleaners and stone soap in warm water to clean its surface. Later use soft and clean material to wipe the surface till it is dry.

If it is a nasty stain and proves obstinate, make a paste of some flour with a little water and apply this paste on the stain and keep it covered overnight cover with a nylon wrap. If it still persists apply Hydrogen peroxide and ammonia to remove it completely. However this may take some time. You should also keep track of the new cleaning agents which are made for granite countertops. A good example is a latest disinfectant cleaner made especially for this stone.

You will also have to reseal the granite countertops to make it last much longer in a good shape, which can be done once in every two years. Some people make the mistake of resealing it frequently, which is not good for the granite. Because of its water proof quality of resin-coat, this gives it lasting protection against moisture.

There is an error in which people place hot pots and pans of the stove or cooker directly on the granite, thinking that its strength will make it endure this high temperature. Yes, it will endure and will not crack but the damage is to its aesthetic value whereby the grits that are in between the pot and the granite will cause irreparable scratches that will blemish its beauty. If ever there is a damage that is too difficult to solve by domestic hands you should call on a professional to correct it as soon as possible.
