Point Of sale Machines

By Shaun R Tillby

Walk into any retail premises from shops to restaurants and you will no doubt see one or more point-of-sale machines - POS machines for short. These are debit or credit card machines which allow business owners to set up and use a merchant account.

POS machines are very useful in the day to day running of a business. They are a credit and debit card machine and also act as cash registers, assuring both the vendor and customer that the correct amount is being paid and the right amount of change given back should a cash sale be made.

The beauty of the POS machine for business owners is the ease of use. The debit or credit card is swiped and once the transaction is approved the sale is made. Alternatively the customer can input his card number and wait for the POS machine to indicate the transaction has been approved. The machine helps improve the efficiency of the whole operation and saves on costs. They also issue receipts and are able to also issue a daily sales and transaction report.

One thing which may deter a business from installing a POS machine is the cost. Businesses would do well to look to future and balance the benefits of having the machine on their premises as opposed to retaining a traditional cash register. Even if the initial costs do appear too high, there are several options open to businesses to allow them to obtain a POS machine.

They can buy a new POS machine. There are also companies selling second hand devices. The other options are to rent a POS machine or lease one. The problem with renting a POS machine is that the fees will rise over time, perhaps doubling within five years. On the plus side, should your rented POS machine develop a fault, your supplier will be forced to replace it.

As with all modern technology, there is the fear that POS machines may soon become obsolete. But as customer protection becomes an ever higher priority, the role of the POS machine, with its built in security, appears to be assured.

Having decided to install a POS machine on his premises, the business owner must then decide which type, make and model. The choice could well be down to how much he has to spend as well as business needs. If a high volume of cash is likely to pass through during the day, a POS machine with a high speed connection will be needed. Otherwise a lower speed dial up connection will suffice. - 26221
