Different Resume Formats

By Cynthia Penfold

Before you decide on the type of resume format you will use, think about the type of job you are applying for as this can have a bearing on which format would work best. While there is no one right format to use, different resume formats serve different purposes; therefore, it is to your advantage to use the one that best goes along with your particular situation.

The chronological format as well as the functional format will be discussed in this article. One of the most popular formats for resumes is the chronological format. The idea behind this type of format is all of your previous work experience will be listed as a timeline defining your work experience. Most people use the reverse chronological format however, you can also use a standard chronological format.

For most people the chronological format will be fine. This is the one of the resume formats which gives the job seeker the opportunity to show how his career advanced. In his earliest jobs he may have worked in a subordinate role but most recently he has been in more of a managerial role.

For some people the functional format may be the best alternative. In particular those who have held a number of different jobs and cannot demonstrate longevity may opt for the functional format because it shifts the focus away from this fact and more towards the type of work the job seeker has done instead of where and when this work was done.

In general any of the resume formats can work well for you as long as you also make sure the information on your resume is well written. It certainly goes without saying that care should be taken to avoid mistakes in grammar or spelling. You should also make sure the content clearly conveys the intended message. Taking these steps is very important because the visual appeal of the format will not overshadow a poorly written resume. - 26221
