How To Capture Your Perfect Portrait Photograph

By Karl Stevens

Individuals have been the subject of several famous photographs from time to time. Portrait photography focuses on portraying a person or a group with all their individual features.

A well done portrait photograph doesn't follow convention, and shows the subject in a mental state that makes the picture unique. However, portraits of one person or of whole families are also clicked by photographers, and these are generally preserved in family albums.

The most significant aspect in a portrait image is the close up, and the face of the subject must come out prominently in it. This is achieved by a common camera trick of making the background a little bit obscure and indistinct so that the person's face gets the best possible focus. A camera with a wider aperture can achieve this perfect tuning between the background and the person's face. One the other hand, it is better to click with a normal aperture if emphasis on the background is as essential as on the subject, which is usually the case in outdoor photography.

Paucity of ideal light for a good image is a usual problem faced by the photographers. However, by following some basic photography tips, a decent portrait photograph can be clicked. One of the tricks is to make the individual sit near the window such that the light coming from it falls on only part of the face. A reflective sheet can be used to light up the other side of the individual's face. However, portrait photography is best done in studios as lighting can be controlled there.

The last but possibly the most important feature of portrait photography is to make the subject feels at home. Technical sophistication in photography will yield results only when the subject is comfortable and relaxed, and projects his or her natural self before the camera. - 26221
